Screen Shot 2014-05-13 at 1.34.26 PMSetting strategic direction. What? Sounds complicated, bureaucratic and traditional.  None of which defines Boulder Food Rescue.  These nontraditional do-gooders position their work (and some of them, their lives) around saving the massive amounts of food that groceries and other food suppliers throw away at the end of the day. They collect the unwanted and imperfect food by bike, yes, by bike, and deliver it within 24-48 hours to more than 50 organizations who serve vulnerable people like homeless individuals and our low income neighbors.

Cultivation Center is honored to work with BFR to help them create their first strategic plan.  We are guided by best practices for strategic planning, but we’ve customized our approach to BFR to align with the non-traditional trajectory of their work.  Currently, we’re in the first phase of strategic planning – Discovery.  We’re collect data from the people who know and love the organization the most, from board members and staff to volunteers and beneficiaries. This helps us to understand what the ground floor of BFR looks like in order to inform the bigger picture.  During most of the strategic planning process we’ll spend our time at 20,000 feet analyzing feedback, facilitating conversations and helping to set BFR on their course for the next three years.  As we dive deeply into their data, we are becoming bigger and bigger fans of BFR’s work. We can tell, we’re going to have a blast at their planning retreat.

Over the next few weeks look for me biking around Boulder delivering some food with Hana, their executive director.  I’m doing some extra squats in hopes of not embarrassing myself as I haul pounds of salvaged food on a bike trailer.  (I’ve heard that they have friendly poundage pulling competitions).  And lastly, I’d like to invite you to join Blair and me at BFR’s Feast of Fermentation event on October 11. If it’s anything like we’ve seen so far, it’ll be a great night. Hana and her team know how to have a good time while working for a good cause.
